São Miguel Apartment
Lisbon, Portugal

The rehabilitation of this deeply degraded apartment, previously uninhabitable, was guided by the premise of preserving its original beauty and maintaining the architectural language of its era. The intervention focused on equipping the space with the necessary amenities for a contemporary family’s lifestyle without compromising its aesthetics and historical identity. While the original layout logic was preserved, the spaces were optimized. Throughout the project, priority was given to preserving the aesthetics of existing architectural elements, such as the transom doors, decorative cornices and moldings, and window shutters. The intervention strikes a balance between respecting the apartment’s history and addressing present-day needs, resulting in a rehabilitation that celebrates the past while embracing the future. The space, modernized yet timeless, retains its essence.
