Fernandes Tomás Apartment

Lisbon, Portugal

Located in the heart of Lisbon, this renovation project stems from the desire to have an apartment close to the rest of the family, and is a complete renovation and extension of a building. The resulting intervention is, however, a relatively anonymous gesture, in a desire to belong to the place, the neighborhood and the city. From the point of view of the city’s morphology, the building appears to be upside down. To the north, the main façade is connected to the narrow street in a city-neighborhood environment. To the rear, on the south façade, the connection is established with the Tagus River and with one of Lisbon’s most emblematic slopes, now transformed by its large-scale buildings. The difference in scale and experiences between the main and rear façades thus stands out, and is identified as a unique aspect for the development of the project. This duality is brought to the interior in a logic of inverse living.

Inside, the spaces are distributed from private to public. This inversion is motivated by the desire to allocate the highest area with the best view over the Tagus River and the city to the social spaces, to the detriment of the bedrooms, which are used more occasionally. Thus, on the interior path, from the entrance to the apartment, the spaces begin to be more compartmentalized, becoming wider and more open, culminating in the south-facing outdoor terrace.
